WHO WE ARE

#FixPolitics DIASPORA Initiative is an offshoot of #FixPolitics www.fixpolitics.org.  #FixPolitics DIASPORA Initiative serves as a one-stop platform to facilitate the education, organization and mobilization of the millions of Nigerians in the Diaspora and hundreds of Nigerian diaspora organizations into an effective and cohesive force acting and speaking with one voice in the advocacy for structural reforms of the political, constitutional, electoral and economic status quo in Nigeria. The overarching goal is to ensure that Nigerian citizens, wherever they live in the world, are informed and mobilized to work together to compel the three arms of government – the executive, the legislator and judiciary to respond URGENTLY and avert the imminent collapse of Nigeria into a failed state (Nigeria is currently the number 13 country on the  global ranking of failed state countries).

Specifically, #FixPolitics DIASPORA’s objective is to act as the Nigerian diaspora support platform which serves as:

  • An online platform for the unification and strengthening of diaspora voices to be heard on issues impeding good governance, economic and human development Nigeria.
  • An advocacy/think tank pushing for diaspora voting in Nigeria.
  • An advocacy/think tank promoting political, constitutional, electoral and economic reforms in Nigeria.

THE #FIXPOLITICS MISSION

The mission of #FixPolitics is to elevate the office of the Citizens to its rightful place in Nigeria and develop a political class of servant leaders. The triangular pillars stand on the triad of:

  1. An empowered and engaged citizenry,
  2. A values-based leadership class for the change Nigeria seeks and
  3. Strong regulatory institutions.

Over one hundred African scholars around the world have volunteered time and knowledge to support #FixPolitics. Hundreds of ordinary citizens and elites have also enthusiastically embraced the movement.

It is this effort to execute the Triangular Pillars of Democracy with a view to fix politics, restore good governance, a functioning democracy as well as economic and human development in Nigeria that informs the need to mobilize Nigerian citizens in the diaspora to join their compatriots in Nigeria to co-lead the advocacy and attainment of a reformed constitutional, political and electoral order in Nigeria.

WHY NIGERIANS IN THE DIASPORA?

The Nigerian diaspora possess three latent but significant strengths that can be leveraged to compel the Nigerian government to actively move towards implementing structural reforms in Nigeria:

POPULATION:

  • It is estimated that the population of Nigerians in diaspora stands at over 15million people (Abike Dabiri, 2017). Numbers is a critical factor in politics. The Nigerian diaspora has the numerical strength to promote and push for political reforms that can help leap-frog Nigeria’s socio-economic and political development.

ECONOMIC POWER:

  • According to PWC, the remittances to Nigeria by Nigerians in the diaspora in 2018 stood at $23.63bn, which equates 83% of the Federal Government budget in 2018 and 11 times the Foreign Direct Investment flows within the same period. PWC projects these remittances will grow to $34.89bn by 2023.
  • Remittances by diaspora Nigerians into Nigeria stand at about 6% of Nigeria’s GDP.
  • A group that commands such economic strength has the capacity to positively influence policy decisions in Nigeria.

QUALITY HUMAN RESOURCE:

  • Available data shows that Nigerians in diaspora are some of the best educated people in the world.
  • In recognition of their strategic importance, the Federal Government signed the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission Establishment Bill into law in July 2017. This gave birth to the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission.
  • Two years later, in 2019, the Federal Government went a step further by recognizing July 25 of every year as National Diaspora Day.

For diaspora Nigerians to take full and effective advantage of these three strengths to demand the right to vote and structural reforms in Nigeria, it is imperative that they organize to become a cohesive force that can compel the Nigerian government to listen and act in accordance to their just demands. This is the essence of the #FixPolitics DIASPORA Initiative.

PARTNERSHIP MODEL BETWEEN #FIXPOLITICS AND THE NIGERIAN DIASPORA COMMUNITY

  • Collaborative effort to establish a pressure group dedicated to working strategically to accentuate the realization of Diaspora voting.
  • Collaboration to promote legislative reforms geared towards actualizing diaspora Nigerians inclusion in the political affairs of Nigeria.
  • #FixPolitics will provide up-to-date information through the Diaspora website aimed at boosting the political awareness of the diaspora community.
  • #FixPolitics will engage the Diaspora community with relevant political campaigns targeted at motivating and energizing Diaspora participation.
  • #FixPolitics will provide an executive structure that serves as a dependable tool for realizing the initiatives of the Nigerian diaspora community towards constitutional, political, electoral and economic development in Nigeria.
  • #FixPolitics will provide an online town hall meeting platform for all Nigerian diaspora organizations and diaspora Nigerians to regularly meet, discuss and reach consensus on diaspora contributory initiatives to Nigeria’s political and constitutional development.
